  This Pennsylvania Civil War Project uses the book:
History of Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-5; prepared in compliance with acts of the legislature by Samuel P. Bates., Bates, Samuel P. (Samuel Penniman), 1827-1902.

The data from the Bates book is entered into an Excel Spreadsheet, Saved to CSV and then converted via the DB Browser program to a SQLite database.

Search Soldier Database

Data has been entered for the 1st through 25th Regiments (3 month service), Erie Regiment, Philadelphia City Cavalry, Independent Artillery Batteries, 11th, 23rd, 26th through 29th, 30th through 42nd (also known as 1st through 13th Pennsylvania Reserves), 43rd through 215th Regiments of Pennsylvania Volunteers. Also, the 'First Five Companies', the 1862, 1863 and 1864 Emergency Militia, the 3rd, 6th, 8th, 22nd, 24th, 25th, 32nd, 41st, 43rd, 45th and 127th Regiments of United States Colored Troops have been entered. Data for the 8th Cavalry Regiment the 4th, 16th and 24th Regiments of Michigan Volunteers, the 1st Artillery, 1st Light Artillery, 4th Independent Battery, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 13th, 14th and 15th Batteries, 1st Cavarly, 5th, 6th, 8th, 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments, 10th, 33rd, 39th, 40th, 41st, 42nd, 43rd, 44th, 45th, 49th, 50th (Engineers), 52nd, 54th, 57th, 58th, 59th, 60th, 61st, 62nd, 63rd, 64th, 65th, 66th, 67th, 68th, 69th, 70th, 71st, 72nd, 73rd, 74th, 76th, 77th, 78th, 80th, 82nd, 83rd, 84th, 86th, 88th, 94th, 95th, 97th, 102nd, 104th, 107th, 108th, 111th, 119th, 120th, 121st, 122nd, 123rd, 124th, 125th, 126th, 134th, 136th, 137th, 140th, 145th, 146th, 147th, 149th, 150th, 154th and 157th Regiments of New York Volunteers have been entered. The New York Regiments entered were in or around Gettysburg at the time of the battle. The rosters of the 1st Minnesota, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 13th, 5th, 6th, 14th and 16th Infantry Regiments, Vermont Volunteers have been added.

The rosters of the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 16th, 17th, 19th and 20th Regiments, 10th Maine Battalion, 1st Maine Cavalry, Steven's (5th Battery), Dow's Battery and Hall's Battery of Maine volunteers with the U.S. Second Sharpshooters (Company D) that were deployed during the battle of Gettysburg have also been added to this database. This data originates from: Maine at Gettysburg, Report of Maine Commissioners, prepared by The Executive Committee, 1898, for and in behalf of the State of Maine, by Charles Hamlin, Greenlief T. Stevens and George W. Verrill, of the Maine Gettysburg Commissioners' Executive Committee.

The roster of the 2nd Regiment, New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry was addded to the database and was sourced from: History of the Second Regiment New Hampshire Volunteers: its camps, marches and battles by Martin Alonzo Haynes.

The roster of the 20th Regiment, Connecticut Volunteer Infantry was addded to the database and was sourced from: The "Twentieth Connecticut"; a regimental history by John Whiting Storrs, 1824-1887.

Information on most Michigan Regiments gleaned from the online Michigan State Archives.

As of May 30, 2023, there are 544,448 entries in this database.
